BACK FROM CUBA

Returning from the Cuba Workshop 2018, photography expert Arne Hodalic presents some of his own images from the trip and a selection of images taken by workshop participants as well as workshop photography assistant Katja Bidovec:

“I was really happy when I started the collaboration with Better Moments, especially when we decided to do our first workshop in Cuba. After visiting the island nation again, I am even more convinced that this decision was the right one. It is definitely a paradise for “street photography” – as the excellent photos taken by the workshop participants below here show. Cuba is a perfect place to improve your street and travel photography.”   – Arne Hodalic

Below, Arne Hodalic comments on a selection of images that he found particularly striking, taken by participants on the workshop:

“As a professor of the history of photojournalism at the University of Ljubljana, I have  a rich archive of some of the greatest photographers of our time and I love to share their work during our workshop evening sessions. Catarina’s great photo reminded me so much of Robert Frank’s iconic cover image of his legendary book “The Americans”. For me, studying the great masters of photography is definitely a good way to improve your own approach to photography.” – Arne Hodalic

“For those who are familiar with rules of classical composition, breaking them can be a lot fun. This is a very nice example how such photos can really work.”

“For my taste, Ulla’s photo is one of the best of our workshop. Even more so, because at the very beginning , Ulla declared herself as a (more or less) beginner in the field of photography. Now it’s up to you to judge that!”  – Arne Hodalic

“With every new model of camera, photo equipment is getting more sophisticated and one can take photos in nearly total darkness. So during our workshop, we were exploring low-light photography to the limits.”  – Arne Hodalic

“According to famous photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson, street photography is basically about mastering the famous “decisive moment” – and Gita got it right in this photo. The flying shoe is definitely the keynote of her image.” – Arne Hodalic

“One of the important lessons during this workshop was also how to approach total strangers and photograph them.”. – Arne Hodalic

Katja Bidovec, photography assistant on this workshop, also captured some memorable street life moments:

It is my hope that the combination of my year long experience as photo editor of National Geographic Slovenija with our assistant Katja Bidovec’ excellent knowledge of digital postproduction and photography talent served as a good opportunity for the workshop participants to widen their visual horizons. Join us for our next workshop on Cuba here.  – Arne Hodalic
