The Photographer of the Month Award for March 2018 goes to David Connell from Phoenix, Arizona, who shot this stunning Icelandic landscape.
David Connell captured this breathtaking view of Landmannalaugar on our Iceland – Travel on Volcanoes Workshop 2017, led by photographer Hans Strand. Afterwards he described it as “a life experience”.
David began dabbling in photography in high school, but it was the great landscapes in Arizona that eventually moved him towards landscape photography. He writes about his winning image:
“I had been lucky enough to have traveled to Iceland twice prior to the workshop, but neither trip had included Landmannalaugar. Hans Strand’s aerial images from Landmannalaugar inspired me to go on the Better Moments Workshop; especially because it included the possibility of photographing from a helicopter.
During the flight I saw this canyon and while I was “clicking away” had a sense that there was something familiar about it. Several months after getting home I was again looking at various images on Hans’ website and smiled when I saw that there was indeed a photograph he had taken which included a part of the canyon in this image. So, this particular canyon, which served as part of the original source of my desire to photograph Landmannalaugar, ended up being a part of my own unforgettable experience with Better Moments.”
Karen Gunn, long-time editor of National Geographic Denmark, says: “Although I have visited Iceland, I have not yet been to Landmannalaugar, but David Connell’s photo has put it firmly on my bucket list. In this image, taken from a helicopter, he really manages to bring out the breathtaking magnificence and sheer vastness of this landscape and the incredible colour palets of the mountains. It is a very strong image.”
