The Photographer of the Month Award for February 2018 goes to Derrick Hsiao from Taiwan who sent us this stunning view of the Milky Way from our 2017 Silk Road Workshop.
Derrick Hsiao, 18, is the youngest participant so far on a Better Moments Workshop – and the youngest to be awarded the title of Photographer of the Month.
In fact, already since the age of 12 he started participating in various international photography workshops, from the sacred monasteries of Shangri-La to the otherworldly landscapes of Iceland. Starting out with an interest in cultural subjects, the visit to Iceland ignited a love of landscape photography. He is also proficient in aerial photography.
“What motivates me the most about photography is the many forms of storytelling it can create. As an avid aerial videographer, filming a landscape from above can often tell a completely different and intriguing story, ” says Derrick Hsiao.
About the Milky Way shot, he says: “This shot was taken at Tashkurgan. Two fellow participants and I decided to take our chances at night photography. We were instantly awed by the vast, expansive scenery of the Milky Way with the underlying mountain in the foreground. It was hands down one of the best experiences from the trip.”
Better Moments CEO and founder, Christian Nørgaard, who was also on this workshop along the ancient Silk Road route through China, comments: “It was an indescribable experience being in this remote region on the border to Pakistan where the window, so to speak, is open straight out to the galaxy and its zillion stars. But in this mesmerising photo Derrick has managed to capture that awe-inspiring experience of almost being able to reach out and touch the Milky Way, rising perfectly out of the mountain peak. It is a really strong achievement.”
