The first runner-up in Photographer of the Year 2016 is Jürgen Wettke from Germany.
“This foto was shot during a helicopter flight over the Þjórsá River on Icelands south coast. Thjorsa is one of the larger glacier rivers on Iceland, rising in the area of Hofsjökull glacier. The black volcanic sand, the white to blue colored cold glacier water and the red iron oxide sedimentation from the rocky mountains made this composition possible. The fascination is the moment, you take the photo – it has already changed the formation and light in the next moment. The hardest work for a photographer, however, is to decide which one to select, because you like most of them. We had luck, excellent weather conditions, the best pilot on Iceland and good advice from my friends from Better Moments. I am visiting Iceland for the third time this year and the country keeps on attracting me even more.” – Jürgen Wittke.
Expert photographer Hans Strand commented: “A vivid photograph of a vivid place. Where on earth will you find something as colorful and complex like this? The answer is Iceland. Mr. Wettke has captured the situation and interpreted this very colorful and complex river delta through a perfect composition”.
